There’s nothing more exciting than deciding to start tracing your family’s roots.

Manitou & Pikes Peak RR

You’ve heard the stories from your grandparents, aunts and uncles, but now you want to know all the details.

Sadly, by the time we decide to search for our ancestors in earnest, most of the relatives with all the knowledge have passed on. This is when you need to use clues of what you already know to search for things you want to know.

Having someone with years of research experience can be very helpful. Most people have high hopes when they first start researching their family’s background. That enthusiasm can come to an abrupt end when nothing or very little turns up.

This is the time to consider hiring a professional. It’s not that we’re any better, it’s just that we’ve being doing it longer. We have experience using online resources, have the expensive subscriptions to research sources, and most importantly, know how to maneuver around them.

Sherry Monahan has been researching the past since the 1990s. Like most genealogists, she started with her family history. Then, in 1997, she began researching her first book, Taste of Tombstone.

That research began before the Internet contained many of the wonderful resources it does today. Back then it was trips to the historical societies, county court houses, and other valuable vaults of information. Today research is much easier, but it does require a lot of time, patience, and persistence.

Don’t get us wrong–even professionals come up empty sometimes. However, when you spend enough time doing research, you learn some tricks. Being able to know how to search is just as important as knowing who, what, and where to search.

There are so many variables when it comes to searching for our ancestors. Was the name spelled incorrectly? Did they change the name for a reason? Was it transcribed wrong?

Knowing all these things and how to get around them can be invaluable.
